The Pawtucket Red Sox, in conjunction with thePawtucket Arts Festival, are pleased to announce that “Furthur” will perform at McCoyStadium on Thursday, July 5. Furthur, which features former GratefulDead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, is starting its summer tour at McCoy. Theband includes Jeff Chimenti (RatDog), drummer Joe Russo (Benevento-Russo Duo,Trey Anastasio), guitarist John Kadlecik (Dark Star Orchestra), and vocalistsSunshine Becker and Jeff Pehrson.

Tickets for the show will go on sale this Saturday,March 10 at 10 a.m. at the PawSox box office at McCoy Stadium, on-line at www.pawsox.com, or over the phone by calling(401) 724-7300. All tickets will be priced at $56.50 which includes all servicefees.

All tickets will be general admission as fans willbe able to sit in the McCoy Stadium seating bowl and be allowed on the field.Children, aged 12 and under, will get in free with each adult ticket holder. Gateswill open at 5:30 p.m. and show time is at 7:00 p.m.

There is no PawSox game on July 5.

XOS Exchange Street Open Studios

More than 40 artists and designers in 5 renovated mill buildings in the of Exchange Street neighborhood of Pawtucket, RI will open their studios to visitors from 10 am to 4 pm on September 8 and 9, 2012. See the unique spaces in which a wide array of artwork is created and chat with the artists and designers about their creative endeavors. You will see paintings, sculpture, fine prints, photography, fine crafts, wearable art, jewelry, graphic and textile design and more. Enjoy music and food as well. All of the locations are just off Route 95, Exit 29, and are within walking distance of each other.

Located in Pawtucket along the Blackstone River, the historic Slater Mill is the site of the earliest textile industry in the country. Eventually 83 textile mills flourished in the area. As the industry has declined in recent years, many of the empty mills in the city are being repurposed into artists’ studios and work/live lofts. Because of the City’s support of the arts, Art Calendar Magazine included Pawtucket in its list of the 10 most artist-friendly locations in the nation.

Historic Slater Mill, home of the Industrial Revolution in America, is proud to host Pawtucket Arts Festival 2012 events by the banks of the Blackstone River. As a PAF event, the Slater Mill Labor & Ethnic Heritage Festival is a folk music and dance celebration of work, art, and heritage…25 years in the making!

The Labor & Ethnic Heritage Festival at Slater Mill offers a FREE (except Slater Mill tours-admission charged) “Made in Rhode Island” music and dance celebration on two main stages, throughout the Slater Mill grounds, and on a tented dance floor with room for audience seating and dancers, alike! Artisans spin, knit, weave, quilt, and cane chairs. New England fiddles serenade young and young at heart with old time tunes! Drums resonate with the sounds of West Africa and the reels of Ireland as performers return to the Festival for an encore performance or to make their Festival debut.

With 25 years of story of its own, the Slater Mill Labor & Ethnic Heritage Festival sets the stages and the Mill grounds with folk music and dance, artisans at work, local and labor organizations on display…for free!

There are tours of the historic Slater Mill and 18th century Sylvanus Brown House (admission charged) offered by Slater’s costumed interpreters who bring history to life.

Labor & Ethnic Heritage Festival performers bring a world of music traditions: American Folk , labor songs, Portuguese music and dance; drumming from West Africa; songwriters in the round; vibrant dance and costume from India; raucous American songs and tunes with wild harmonica; mystical Celtic melodies…and more to an internationally renowned Industrial Revolution landmark, Slater Mill.

“The Working River Awards” return this year in tribute to individuals and organizations who strive tirelessly on behalf of labor and working traditions in Rhode Island, from Woonsocket to Westerly where fields, farms, and factories share the working day with professions, knowledge districts, and a vibrant arts and cultural sector...with Slater Mill as a shining example of old meets new!

The Labor & Ethnic Heritage and Pawtucket Arts Festival’s partnership with schools and learning communities, Arts Passport, an education program of the RI Arts Learning Network and the Rhode Island Alliance for Arts Education will be available to connect the festival to high school arts and humanities education in Rhode Island.

All in all, this is a Festival that celebrates working folk, their music, their labor, and their lives…all “Made in Rhode Island” where the years are silver and the music is gold!.

The Community Players offer a Directors' Showcase

Four short plays - Four authors - Four directors.

What do an oblivious private detective, a lonely southern boy obsessed with swizzle sticks, a surly waitress and a small town with a secret have in common? An exciting evening of theatre! The Community Players, now celebrating their 92nd season in Pawtucket, present an evening of one-act plays showcasing the work of four directors directing pieces by four top playwrights.

Shannon Lewis directs Shirley Jackson's classic story The Lottery about a ritual in a smalltown. Peter Shaffer's British comedy, The Public Eye is directed by Paul Oliver. Dan Fisher directs David Ives' popular comedy The Philadelphia, and Christopher Durang's hilarious parody of "The Glass Menagerie" For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls is directed by Jarrad Nunes.

The Directors' Showcase will be presented September 14, 15 and 16 at Jenks Auditorium, Division Street, Pawtucket (across from McCoy Stadium). Friday and Saturday at 8 pm, with a Sunday matinee at 2 pm. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door (no reservations are necessary). The 14th Annual Pawtucket arts festival presents the "Slater Park Fall Festival" which is a weekend that celebrates the beautify of the park and art....and includes activities at the Daggett Farm, Looff Carousel, the Rhode Island Watercolor Society and the historic Daggett House

Over 100 arts and craft vendors are showcased in this juried festival that also features an 'open air market' of food trucks, farmers market, craft exhibitions, music and activities with a special performance by the Rhode Island Philharmonic "Pops in the Park" on Saturday at 5:00pm.

Other events include storytellers Len Cabral and Valerie Tutson, Chris Carbone Magic Show, MacA Doo the clown, the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, Rock-A-Baby RI, an Irish Festival, car show, RI Watercolor Society gallery, Daggett House tours, folk dancers, kids tent, face painting, and demonstrations by master gardeners at Daggett Farm and by Pawtucket-based artists including Ocean Woodturners, origami and makigami by Ben Coleman, Zumba by Jennifer Kennedy Entertainment, yoga by Shri Studios and "Living Statues" by students from the Beacon Charter High School for the Arts. Ben Coleman - Origami and Makigami Demonstration
Benjamin John Coleman is a Rhode Island native and Pawtucket-based artist, author and inventor. Coleman will be demonstrating how to turn newspaper into braided, durable jewelry through his makigami technique. He will also be holding several hands-on folding clinics where he'll teach how to use origami to make animals, leaves and flowers from his books.

Jennifer Kennedy Entertainment - Zumba
Jennifer Kennedy is the director and founder of JM Kennedy Pole Fitness Dance Studio, which is located at 461 Main Street - Studio D2, Pawtucket, RI. Her passion is cabaret, jazz, salsa and pole dancing. Jennifier was born in Derby, England with a Caribbean background and moved to the United States in 1976. She has always had a passion for dance and the arts, teaching dance for over 30 years. Jennifer has owned a cabaret troop and performed on cruise ships when docked in St. Thomas Virgin Island, hoping one day to own her own cabaret lounge.

Dynamic local storyteller VALERIE TUTSON!
Valerie Tutson delights audiences of all ages with her stories from around the world, with an emphasis on African traditions. Her repertoire includes stories and songs she learned in her travels to South Africa, her experiences in West Africa, stories from African American history. Valerie is a member and Director of the Rhode Island Storyteller, in addition to serving as co-Director of the National Black Storytelling Festival in Providence, RI.

Len Cabral - Storyteller
Len Cabral is a internationally acclaimed storyteller who has been enchanting audiences with his storytelling performances at schools, libraries, museums and festivals since 1976. A great grandson of a Cape Verdean whaler whose grandparents immigrated to America from the islands off the coast of West Africa. Len's strong Cape Verdean ancestry comes alive in his exuberant retelling of African, Cape Verdean, and Caribbean folktales as well as original stories and tales from around the world. Len is a popular storyteller at theaters, schools and festivals throughout the United States and has performed at festivals in Ireland, Belgium, Austria, Holland and Canada. He is the recipient to the National Storytelling Network 2001 Circle of Excellence Oracle Award. The author of a children's book for young readers and contributing to several folktale collections, Len also has five Cd's and audio cassettes featuring a wide range of his favorite stories, several receiving NAPPA and Parents' Choice awards. For teachers, librarians, caregivers and aspiring storytellers, "Len Cabral's Storytelling Book," published by Neal-Schuman, NY is an excellent resource on how to begin telling stories, filled with 22 stories from around the world with telling and teaching guides, storytelling games and an extensive bibliography.

The Rhode Island Film Collaborative (RIFC) is organizing a panel to encourage smaller productions, demystify tax credits, foster local film companies and achieve more consistent local production. This event is free and open to the public.

The Tax Credit Panel will consist of:

Pawtucket Arts Festival Fringe Festival Event: Forget-Me-Not Gallery & Jazz with Rod Luther!

Rod teaches jazz piano at ProvidenceCollege. He plays piano music for all types of functions includingwedding receptions and fundraisers. He accompanies vocalists andperforms in solo concerts. Rod enjoys playing jazz standards andshowtunes, including the music of Gershwin, Ellington, Porter, Berlinand others. He also plays popular songs by Elton John, StevieWonder, James Taylor and Alicia Keys.

Rod has studied improvisationtechniques with David Darling and taken jazz studies at NaropaInstitute in Boulder, Colorado. He has studied jazz piano privatelywith Stanley Cowell, Norman Simmons and Paul Schmeling.

Rod is a member of the jazz group inresidence at the First Unitarian Church in Providence and a foundingmember of the Providence Piano Club. He also plays the piano forSunday services at the Olney Street Baptist Church in Providence andaccompanies the gospel choir at Providence College.

In the spring of 2011, Rod received agrant from the City of Pawtucket Arts Review Panel to fund a solojazz piano concert which he performed in September 2011 as part ofthe Pawtucket Arts Festival.
