Gospel music was born out of the despair of enslaved Africans. It is a blending of a people’s pain and hopes. It is music that understands suffering and salvation. It is music to make you weep and let your spirit soar. It is music sung in Boston, Birmingham, Tennessee and Texas, Chicago and New Orleans. It is American folk music, original and enduring. It is memories of a nation’s darkest times and most lofty aspirations. It is music to make you clap your hands and stomp your feet.
Rivers have always been a significant part of gospel music. They have encouraged the faithful and faithless to go to the water to be cleansed, renewed or reborn. Mixed Magic Theatre is located near the banks of one of these great rivers. The Blackstone River’s rushing waters fueled the Industrial Revolution which in turn helped to build a nation. The waters of the Blackstone, like all great rivers, carry the stories of the people who lived and worked on its banks. The Blackstone, like the Mississippi, the Ohio and the Colorado, holds forever the names, faces and voices of the people who make up America.
The Greatness of Gospel will be directed by Kimberly Morrison. The ensemble features singers Jason Quinn, Amos Hamrick, Sr., Sheila Hepburn, Nicole Mitchell, new Pawtucket Foundation director Thomas Mann, Jeannie Carson, Michelle Blanchette & ?, singing a collection of well known gospel favorites and some new classics.
Bring friends and the whole family to experience the joy of a uniquely American music form. |
